1). Hang light fixtures closer to the ceiling
Hanging pendant lighting a little higher than normal can help create the illusion of taller ceilings. If possible, skip the ceiling fan to avoid cramping the room.
2). Install carpeting slightly darker than your walls

The key here is to choose a carpet color that complements the color of your walls. A slight contrast can open up the room and draw the eye downwards. Be sure to avoid installing a carpet color that completely overpowers the rest of the colors in the room.
3). Install crown-molding and trim

When choosing a color for crown molding, we suggest choosing the same color as the walls so as to not draw attention upwards. On the other hand, choose a contrasting trim color can bring more attention downwards.
4). Paint the ceiling a lighter color than the walls

High-gloss paint (preferably white) is a great option here to help reflect light and draw attention away from the ceiling.
5). Raise Door Openings

If you are willing to make structural changes, consider raising the interior door openings closer to the ceiling for a more open and welcoming feel.
